Journal of Cultural Management and Cultural Policy / Zeitschrift für Kulturmanagement und Kulturpolitik

The Journal of Cultural Management and Cultural Policy is dedicated to international perspectives that address a wide range of issues in cultural management and cultural policy research and practice. It is published twice a year with a thematic section focusing on a special issue and an open section with contributions on varied topics. We invite articles that reflect on organizational structures of creative enterprises, economic and managerial issues in the arts, cultural policy in all its dimensions, as well as creative and aesthetic processes in cultural production, distribution and perception. The journal aims to present multifaceted analysis and rich discourse on current issues in cultural management and cultural policy and to promote the development of research designs and methods relating to both new and established practices in these fields. The journal is open to any theoretical and methodological approach, as long as authors adhere to scholarly rigor.

The journal is edited by Constance DeVereaux, Steffen Höhne and Martin Tröndle (editors-in-chief). Please send contributions and inquiries to Johanna Schindler (managing editor), submissions@jcmcp.org.

About the journal

To strengthen the inter- and transdisciplinary character of research in the arts and culture, the journal publishes research articles (6000 to 10.000 words), exploratory essays (about 6.000 words), and case studies (about 4.000 words) from disciplines such as sociology and psychology (of the arts), (cultural) politics, economics, history, cultural theory, philosophy, theatre studies, musicology, and arts education, or the interdisciplinary integration of these.

Research articles must fulfill the highest standards in methodological and theoretical approaches; whereas essays give the opportunity to develop a more personal perspective on topics. Case Studies and book reviews complement each issue.

Peer Review

For quality assurance purposes all submitted research articles and essays are reviewed in a double-blind peer review procedure.

The editors-in-chief and managing editor evaluate every submitted manuscript. If a manuscript does not meet the required formal or academic criteria or if the topic and content of an article clearly do not fit in with the Journal it can be directly rejected instead of being submitted to a review. Authors are informed of this approximately four weeks after submission of the manuscript.

Three experts review each manuscript. To reviewers are selected by the editors-in-chief, one is suggested by the author. The two reviewers are selected according to the methodological scope and the topic of the manuscripts. The reviewing follows a standardized procedure, including quantitative and qualitative aspects.

The results of the reviews will be sent to the author in the editorial decision letter. Manuscripts might be accepted, subjected to revisions, or rejected. This process can take up to four months.

The revised manuscripts are then resubmitted to the reviewers. The second reviewing should not take longer than four weeks. The authors are informed about the decision on the definitive acceptance of the manuscript; last small changes may be requested.

Review criteria are:

  • - conceptual quality of the manuscript
  • - soundness of methodology
  • - precision of objectives
  • - academic importance of the topic
  • - significance of research approach
  • - relevancy to arts management practices
  • - readability (presentation, stylistic form)
