The Elderly in Russia
A Socio-Psychological Approach
This paper examines different aspects of aging starting from the origins of studying the issue and then exploring it from the point of view of social changes in Russia in the late 1980s and early 1990s, that led to a qualitative change in the cohorts of older people. Therefore, the social assistance that was designed for the elderly twenty to thirty years ago is not relevant today, moreover, it is not adequate to new cohorts of the elderly. All this suggests that many views on “elderly people” should be reconsidered both by scientists and social sphere employees, and that a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of the elderly is needed.
