Writing Dis/Comfort
A Novelist's Approach to Ageing Bodies and Un/Comfortable Places
DOI: 10.14361/9783839449028-006

Sarah Butler's contribution is a reflection on the role of dis/comfort in the act of creative writing from the perspective of a practitioner. Bringing in her expertise as a novelist, Butler discusses her novel »Jack and Bet« (published with Picador in 2020) as an un/comfortable space and considers narrative and representational strategies which generate situations of dis/comfort for the reader. Her poetic and theoretical exploration of »Jack and Bet« foregrounds the ageing body as a site of potential dis/comfort and identifies sources of comfort and discomfort within domestic and urban environments.
